Customer Complaint: Check Engine Light On and Runs Rough

Common issues with the GMC Acadia

Part of the Technicians notes were as follows:

"Checked for codes, found stored code, verified code setting criteria, checked conditions of engine oil and level, checked camshaft actuator data parameters with scan tool, noted when commanding camshaft actuators with scan tool there is a significant delay in response, checked for related bulletins, found a bulletin but does not coincide with vehicle conditions, checked for misfire counter and did not find concerns. Recommend replacement of engine timing chains, actuators and related components, a stretched timing chain or a partially clogged camshaft actuator can cause these conditions." "Upon inspection found, found code P0019 code stored, uploaded photo, checked for bulletin, TSB #21-NA-278: Diagnostic Strategy for Ticking, Tap or Rattle Noise from Engine with Possible Misfire, Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Illuminated - DTCs P0300, P0301-P0306 and/or P0016-P0019 Set - (Nov 23, 2021) found related bulletin for code stored, performed test to camshaft actuators, noted exhaust camshaft actuators have a delayed response compared to intake bank 1 actuators, recommend replacement of camshaft actuators (bank 1 and 2) timing chains with tensioners and guides, necessary gaskets related to repair, engine oil and filter, coolant.

The Acadia with the 3.6L engine is notorious for timing chain stretch that elongates the chain and throws off the engines synchronization. This issue dates back to the 2007 models and has continued to more recent year models and can only be resolved by cradle dropping the motor as seen in the picture above.

Symptoms include Check Engine Light, Startup Noise (slapping or rattling) and poor performance (rough idling, misfires and loss of power).

The main reason for this failure is due to not changing the oil on regular scheduled maintenance intervals and/or poor motor oil quality.

This condition can turn catastrophic if the timing chain breaks slamming the pistons into the valves. This requires  more parts and labor driving the price to exceedingly high levels.
