What Soldiers Should Know About Vehicle Care in Central Texas
Soldiers come to Fort Hood from every climate in the country. A vehicle that ran fine in Germany, Hawaii, or Fort Drum can struggle here — and most issues show up in the first six months. Heat is the biggest factor.
- Batteries die 12–18 months early. The manufacturer’s “5-year warranty” is written for moderate climates. Plan for replacement around 36 months in this heat.
- A/C systems get exposed. Any leak you have will show up in July. We pressure-test and dye-trace rather than just recharging and hoping.
- Coolant ages fast. Old coolant loses corrosion protection. We recommend a flush every 60,000 miles — earlier if your vehicle came from a cooler climate.
Diesel trucks especially need attention. The DEF systems, fuel filters, and EGR coolers on modern Power Strokes, Cummins, and Duramaxes are expensive to fix when neglected — and many of them get neglected during deployments. If your truck sat through a 9-month rotation, get a full inspection before you put it back into daily use.
